Laurence Fishburne has been cast as Perry White, the editor-in-chief at the Daily Planet where Clark Kent works, in Zack Snyder’s reboot of the Superman franchise, Man Of Steel. In the past, White was been played by Jackie Cooper and Frank Langella, and has been, well, white. But it seems as though Snyder has decided to get rid of many of the antiquated aspects of Superman lore, and add a more modern look and feel to the city of Metropolis.
This race change isn’t an uncommon occurrence in comic books or their movies. Just yesterday Marvel announced that a new half-Latino, half-Black Spider-Man will be introduced in the books, and the character of Heimdall in this year’s Thor movie was played by Idris Elba, even though in the comics the character was always portrayed as being white. Of course, people will be up-in-arms about this, but Fishburne has a stellar track record, and to think that Metropolis wouldn’t have at least one black guy walking around is just ridiculous.
Man Of Steel stars Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Diane Lane, Kevin Costner, amongst others, and will be released on June 14, 2013.
