On Friday evening, Solange—along with her husband, 11-year-old son, and a family friend—attended a Kraftwerk concert in New Orleans. Though the event was expected to be a night of fun, things turned ugly after “four older white women” reportedly harassed Solange. Why? Because she and her family were doing what many other people do at live concerts—dancing.
Shortly after the incident, the 30-year-old artist went to Twitter to share the experience with her followers, and tried to explain why many POC do not feel safe in “white spaces.” Though many of the tweets have since been deleted, Solange wrote a heartfelt essay on the matter and posted it on her website Sunday. It’s called “And Do You Belong? I Do.”
In the piece, she gives a more in-depth account of Friday’s events, and how it was one of many instances in which she felt uncomfortable.
Solange then explains why she was moved to share the incident on social media, fully aware of how many people would respond.
