A few days ago, Joe Jonas took to his Instagram to tease us with a preview of his new project with the caption simply reading "dnce." DNCE was born out of Jonas' plan for an offbeat pop project inspired by the melodic sensibilities of Earth, Wind & Fire and Hall & Oates. To assemble the group, Jonas looked to familiar faces from tour including guitarist JinJoo Lee (who played for Jordin Sparks, Charli XCX, CeeLo Green), bassist/keyboardist Cole Whittle (founding member of Semi-Precious Weapons) and drummer Jack Lawless (who left college his first semester play on the Jonas Brothers' 2006 tour).
Today, DNCE arrives with the premiere of their debut single "Cake by the Ocean." All rapturous riffs and swaggering keys, the song arrives like a feverish shot of pop through the dark, lighting up a coastal sky in a fit of groovy-grated hooks supremely baked into the slap-clapping chorus. One part swagging 70's, one part buttery R&B, "Cake by the Ocean" is funk-fueled jam hell-bent on shaking you into the early hours like a California-laced dose of "Get Lucky."
Their single came together when Joe overheard producers Mattman & Robin say they wanted to get some cake by the ocean. While Jonas realized the Swedish producers actually meant the drink Sex on the Beach, the title inspired him to craft a new song. Collaborating with Justin Tranter (responsible for co-writing some of pops most recent hits including Hailee Steinfeld's "Love Myself" and Selena Gomez's "Good For You"), Robin Fredrikson and Mattias Larsson, the song came to life. "That song was a total breakthrough," Jonas told Complex over email. "Once we came up with 'Cake by the Ocean,' everything was electric." The band has been rehearsing in NYC all week and has seen everyone from GiGi Hadid, Hailee Steinfeld, Devon Windsor and Reeve Carney stopping by to check out their new songs.
