It's been almost nine years since Missy Elliott put out a proper studio album, and, other than a pair of songs that arrived unexpectedly in the summer of 2012, she hasn't given much indication that new music is on the way. In a video chat interview with Yahoo's "The Yo Show" today, she explained that the wait probably won't be ending particularly soon and offered some explanation as to why.

"I think everybody gets writer's block, but I don't think that's the situation," she noted toward the end, explaining that music has changed since she came out and that expectations are high. Earlier on, she offered more on the subject:

When I create something, it's got to be special. And it can't just be throw something out there because I feel like I'm Missy. I've got to feel like what I'm giving the fans is 100 percent and that it's game-changing. I don't just throw out microwave records.

She also questioned the pace of contemporary music releases:

When you are creating to the magnitude that I try to create, your brain is like a computer sometimes. It needs to refresh... It didn't used to be like that. It used to be like your album was such a classic that it could go on for two years and then you drop another joint. But it's now like this (snaps). But your brain needs time to refresh because things happen in your life where, you know, you can then write something else instead of the same three topics. Like, how many times are we going to talk about the club?

Interviewer Michael Yo also asked whether Missy is working with Faith Evans on her new album, which Missy confirmed. She added that she and Faith used to live together and that Faith "allowed me to stay in her house and eat up her food when I had no money. Oodles of noodles, eating up all her food."

Check out the full interview above to tide you over while you continue to wait for that new Missy album.
