Autre Ne Veut: “I guess in 2007-2008, somewhere in there [I started playing live shows]. I started writing the songs for my first record starting in 2005-2006. I was living in Chicago at the time. The hybrid of pop and soul music and reggae and stuff like that all started kind of coming together for me. It was the first time I had really made non-guitar based pop music or pop in the broadest sense of the term.

“When I moved back from Chicago, I was just out there for about nine months, I started playing shows in Brooklyn basically. Kind of all the DIY that weren’t run by Todd Patrick because he didn’t want to book me. I played at Death by Audio and this place Europa, which is in Greenpoint. Just random spots.

"Dan, who does Oneohtrix Point Never, he was in the noise scene, helped me get on some of his shows and other people’s shows. I was doing this thing where I’d have an iPod backing band and was just singing. I don’t know if I made very many fans in that time period. It was the wrong venue and my shit was way weirder than it is now. That’s where it started."
