All artists have influences. But there's a difference between influence and straight-up imitation. Although we're not taking sides, there's been a lot of chatter around the Internet about "Tik Tok" singer Ke$ha and her supposed similarities to French electro-pop singer and hot indie rock girl Uffie. From the LA Times to tweet comments from hipster celebs like Jeremy Scott and Cobra Snake Queen Cory Kennedy, they all suggest that Ke$ha's been swagger-jacking Uffie in her new tracks.
We got to know Ke$ha this week in her own Complex 7 interview, but we've been feeling Uffie since she started popping up on the blogs in '06. We can see the similarities—both blonde party chicks, both use a heavy dose of hip-hop slang, and both pepper auto-tune and club-banging synths throughout their music. Before it turns into another full-fledged mainstream feud, we wanted to evaluate each girl in a series of head-to-head battles to decide once and for all, who's the electro-pop-princess-of-the-moment, Ke$ha or Uffie? Cast your vote below...
MUSIC
UFFIE: The Paris-based singer's been in the game since 2006, the year she recorded her underground hit "Pop the Glock." After 3 years, she recently dropped a video for the song, which created even more confusion about who originated the vocal style. Truth is, Uffie recorded "The Party" (listen here) with Justice in the same cheeky way in '07, the song that loyal Uffie fans and friends claim Ke$ha allegedly swag-jacked.
KE$HA: It's no doubt that Ke$ha's strong, catchy vocals, reminiscent of Uffie or not, made "Tik Tok" a succes. But on the music side, her beats (created by Dr. Luke) veer more towards the over-produced sounds of Lady Gaga and Sean Kingston than the creative blips we hear from Uffie's Ed Banger beatmakers.
ADVANTAGE: UFFIE
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
DANCING
UFFIE: It's safe to say that the girl isn't exactly the dancing type. Rather, she's the drunken-swaying, stage-diving type. We give her some brownie points for her raging abilities.
KE$HA: To be fair, it looks like the new girl's putting an effort into some moves, just check out her minute of choreography. We've seen worse!
ADVANTAGE: KE$HA
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SEX APPEAL
UFFIE: Even if pasty hipsters aren't your type, Uffie is the party girl who can get completely trashed yet still look as cute as the girl next door. She's like a girl you met at Santos on Friday night who's capable of cleaning up for dinner with the parents on Saturday night.
KE$HA: Ke$ha is a guy's-best-friend kind of girl, meaning she's could probably drink us under the table, but is that sexy? Everyone loves a fun chick, but she kind of looks like the type of messy girl who would puke in your mouth if you caught her on a bad day. Also, the X-Tina circa "Dirrrty" hair needs to go. Shampoo.
ADVANTAGE: UFFIE
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
POP POTENTIAL
UFFIE: The girl's been in the game for years and hasn't broken out in the U.S., though you'd probably disagree if you've frequented LA or NYC clubs in the past three years (not to mention Europe). But with her debut album Sex Dreams and Denim Jeans finally coming out next month, maybe this will finally be her time to shine.
KE$HA: Ke$ha started off the new decade as THE popstar, landing 2010's first #1 single and setting a new record for the most downloaded single by a female artist ever. And anyone who gets the privilege of ruffling through Conan's hair is a winner as far as we're concerned.
ADVANTAGE: KE$HA
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
COLLABORATIONS
Uffie: Regardless of mainstream radio play, Uffie's collabos have been spinning in clubs for over three years. In her interview with Pedestrian TV, she talks about performing with Pharrell and her low-key record label Ed Banger records. Since the beginning of her career, she's worked with fellow label mates Justice, Mr. Oizo, and DJ Feadz as well as performed with Amanda Blank and BFF DJ Steve Aoki. Good company to keep.
KE$HA: You've heard her on Flo-Rida's "Right Round" and you've heard Diddy's voice on the opening of her hit "Tik Tok," but did you know she also writes songs for other artists? Babygirl co-wrote the song "This Love" for Australian-duo The Veronicas, "The Time of Our Lives" for Miley Cyrus, and recently, a song for Rihanna. Ms. Sebert also kept herself even busier by touring the U.S. with "My Dick" singer, Mickey Avalon.
ADVANTAGE: UFFIE

3rd option, neither? I've never heard Kesha, but uffie just sounds like a cheap rip off of MIA to me. So maybe they should both write checks to her...

M.I.A has been quoted as saying ke$ha is ripping off uffie's style. just sayin... its fucking blatant as hell. anyone who doesn't notice this hasn't listened extensively. also this article doesn't fucking go into the good detail of it either. they refer to ed banger as "low key" when its probably the hottest electro label in the world short of ultra. Ed banger is a fucking lifestyle brand, nuff said. going back to uffie, however, they also say she isn't as popular. wow. fucking kidding me? has this journalist just never been outside the united states? hahaha, if he thinks ke$ha would ever have international appeal, he's sorely mistaken. fuck her. she totally jacked everything from the image down to the rhyme schemes and flow. this is especially sad because uffie kind of sucks. Amanda Blank all the way. we need a bitch who smokes blunts, not someone who thinks they're really fucking special for drinking jack daniels. Also, I can't wait to hear one of these dumb bitches try and mc over dubstep, cause you know its coming sooner rather than later.

I'm glad someone else noticed the similarities. Swagger. Jacked.

M.I.A. and kesha both sound like the generic sisters of lil' wayne. I'm giving props to uffie for being more open minded in her lyrics

Uffie's pop the glock song was rather sad... Kesha's song is just annoying. Ill give it to Uffie, maybe the "girl next door" look is in. Plus the creative video got me...

Firstly, uffie isnt french shes american and tries to talk with a random accent. Uffie's songs are pretty boring, except for pop the glock and even then shes just talking with harmonizing effects thrown in there. Ke$ha is annoying at times - & the drunk "Im so fun" thing gets abit old after awhile. But atleast she has pretty much an album full of catchy songs instead of just one. My votes for Ke$ha, shes more interesting
direwolf May 3rd, 2010 at 09:55 AM
again, dumbass. learn your shit before using your keyboard. uffie HAS an album. its been produced (over the last three years) by some of the biggest names in techno, electro and house, and features plenty of fantastic guest vocalists. just because ke$ha managed to come out with one first (without the all star cast), doesn't mean she has worked more.

Uffie is the original elctro girl! Kesha is a little cheap skate who needs some original shit. Uffie is undergrund and alternative and Kesha is watered down electronic music for the masses. uffie all the way! Desperatley waiting for Uffies debut album Sex Dreams & Denim Jeans! Kesha can suck it!

I think that Ke$ha is so totally amazing and that french chick is just a stupid slut. Ke$ha knows music and can sing it too :]
