Just days after Trump suggested that we should arm teachers in order to address our nation’s school gun violence epidemic, a Georgia teacher allegedly fired a single shot from a handgun in a locked high school classroom. Fortunately, there were no students in the classroom at the time, and no one was shot. One student, however, did injure their ankle while Dalton High School was being evacuated.
After firing the weapon, the social studies teacher who Dalton police have identified as 53-year-old Jesse Randall Davidson, barricaded himself in the classroom at Dalton High School. Davidson is also a play-by-play announcer for the school’s football team. After a 45-minute stand-off with police, the teacher was taken into custody. No word yet as to why Richardson fired the gun.
The incident comes just one week after police found a “threatening” note on the floor of a classroom at Dalton, after which local police had planned on increasing their presence at schools around the city. However, authorities say it’s still unclear if the events are related. Meanwhile, Twitter seems to agree that Trump's idea of arming teachers is ridiculous, as Wednesday's incident would suggest.
