Today, President-elect Donald Trump beefed on Twitter with former President Bill Clinton, the husband of Trump's former election opponent, over a phone call. The petty beef between a former president and a future president might be the greatest summary of 2016 we've seen so far.

Just recently, Bill Clinton told reporters that the president-elect did call him after winning the election. But he had some harsh words for Trump too, saying he "doesn't know much, [but] one thing he does know is how to get angry, white men to vote for him."

As you might expect, Trump got his feelings hurt and went to Twitter to let it out:

Bill Clinton stated that I called him after the election. Wrong, he called me (with a very nice congratulations). He "doesn't know much" ...

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) December 20, 2016

especially how to get people, even with an unlimited budget, out to vote in the vital swing states ( and more). They focused on wrong states

A few hours later, Bill Clinton clapped back on Twitter:

Here’s one thing @realDonaldTrump and I can agree on — I called him after the election. https://t.co/URSS89oQ6P

Because Clinton told reporters just recently that Trump called him after the election—not the other way around—Clinton's response on Twitter could suggest that the two have spoken on multiple occasions, with Clinton calling Trump at least once after the election.

Even before Clinton replied, others on Twitter called Trump out for his attacks on the former president:

Remember when the President of the Philippines called POTUS a "son of a whore"? One has to wonder how Trump would handle same insult? https://t.co/5qyZAlhlXR

Dude, there were three terrorist attacks yesterday around the world. Stop whining about Bill Clinton, and go to an intelligence briefing. https://t.co/ixpOaANonE

It amuses me how easily he trolled you https://t.co/41Fpx0iMTP

Wow, that's an important thing to focus on considering the terror attacks yesterday and the ongoing slaughter in Aleppo. https://t.co/xJiv58EX8L

Of course, it's far from the first time Trump has insulted Clinton on Twitter:

There’s never been anyone more abusive to women in politics than Bill Clinton. My words were unfortunate-the Clintons’ actions were far worse

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) October 10, 2016

No matter what Bill Clinton says and no matter how well he says it, the phony media will exclaim it to be incredible. Highly overrated!

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) July 27, 2016

Remember that Bill Clinton was brought in to help Hillary against Obama in 2008. He was terrible, failed badly, and was called a racist!

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) December 29, 2015

I hope Bill Clinton starts talking about women's issues so that voters can see what a hypocrite he is and how Hillary abused those women!

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) January 2, 2016

Does anybody remember when Bill Clinton, in 2008, worked long and hard for Hillary? She LOST! Now Bill is at it again. Just watch.

However, in the past, Trump has tweeted praise of Bill Clinton, both as a friend and a politician:

.@BillClinton was very nice to me, as I am to him, on the Piers Morgan Show (CNN). He is loyal to his friends. @piersmorgan

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) June 6, 2012

I hope Bill Clinton and NEWSMAX's Chris Ruddy are enjoying their mission to Africa. Two great people.

Smart move by @BarackObama having Pres. Bill Clinton deliver the @DNC convention keynote.

Trump has even retweeted a picture of himself golfing with the former president:

"@DanScavino: here it is with @realDonaldTrump @BillClinton #Arnie & myself - in the blue of course! @TrumpGolf NY! pic.twitter.com/Q12gN4EJ5O"

Let's just hope Twitter fingers don't turn to trigger fingers.
