Stylin' On You: 10 Ridiculous Battle Rap Moments
Tonight in New York City, Eminem's Red Bull EmSee: The Road to 8 Mile event is going down. The event will pit some of the illest up-and-coming battle rappers against each other, forcing them to come off the dome (ayo!) for industry heavyweight judges like Alchemist and Just Blaze. We even heard that Slim Shady himself might make a surprise appearance. While we're looking forward to catching the MC battles, it's less about hearing an ill extemporaneous punchline than some plain old battle fuckery. Nowadays, due in no small part to the prevalence of cameras and flipcams, there's been an influx of videos of rappers getting knocked out, embarrassed, or just spitting some "WTF?" type lines during battles. That's why we put together this list of Complex's Favorite Ridiculous Battle Rap Moments. So for those of you attending, keep your fingers crossed and your flipcams at the ready. And just to be safe, a list of words that rhyme with "ridiculous" wouldn't hurt either.
#10. Bones Brigante vs Young Ruge
Why it's memorable: A fight breaks out.
Best line: "Bishop Brigante wouldn't sign your autograph in any given day." (Young Ruge)
Complex says: After the classic "Stylin' On You" video set the Internet on fire, battles turning into beatdowns became an everyday thing. But most of the fights were either too raw to be funny, or filmed too sloppily to be watchable. This fight became a happy exception when a seemingly harmless reference to a local Canadian rapper, Bishop Brigante (who Drake once lost a $7,000 dollar watch to), set off Bones and caused another rap battle gone wrong. Get ya popcorn ready!
#9. Jae Millz vs Murda Mook
Why it's memorable: Because it's so personal.
Best line: "Don't make me put in the damn order/To take the bitch, rape the bitch, tape the shit, and make you hold the camcorder!" (Murda Mook)
Complex says: Although there are plenty of classic SMACK DVD battles between various rappers, this one always stuck out to us because of the real life animosity between these two. It's obvious from the get-go that these two grew up in the same hood, know intimate details about about each other, and actually hate each other. That's why they can spit lines like, "Ain't you the nigga that used to get smacked in Art and Design?" and "Where was you when your crew got they ass beat on Lenox?"
#8. Charles Hamilton vs Rone
Why it's memorable: Because Charles Hamilton lost to this guy.
Best line: "Sonic The Hedgehog/You can't fuck with me dog/So do what you do best and roll up into a ball." (Rone)
Complex says: When Charles Hamilton had his ass handed to him after foolishly challenging Serius Jones to an improv battle at SOBs two months before this, it was definitely a FAIL. However, we couldn't fault Charles all that much since Serius Jones is, if nothing else, a dope-ass battle rapper who has given the business to some of the best. But when Charles Hamilton lost to this random fan during a cypher at PSU, it was a complete embarrassment. Especially because Hamilton arrogantly doesn't even try too hard even though the cameras are obviously rolling. First Sticky Fingaz, now this? Streets is watching, doggie!
#7. Math vs Dose
Why it's memorable: After talking tough, Dose gets smacked, only to run away.
Best line: "When he see the iron/He gone be fuckin' flying/Like a deer when he see a lion." (Math)
Complex says: After Math gets all up in Dose's face, he demands Dose get out of his face, to which Dose complies only to still get punched in the face. Of course the best part is actually footage of Dose running for his life, just like Math had predicted he would.
#6. Jin vs Serius Jones
Why it's memorable: Because Jin looks like he's going to cry.
Best line: "You been wack your whole career/Ain't there two billion people in China?/You can't even go platinum over there." (Serius Jones)
Complex says: There's no doubt that Jin is one of the best battle rappers around, but maybe that's why he took his loss to Serius Jones so bad. After ripping through plenty of dudes with his dope freestyle rhymes, Jin finally met his match when Jones started spittin' a shitload of racist Asian lines. Instead of flipping them around and turning a negative into a positive like he usually does, Jin choked and by the end of it looked like he was about ready to cry. Guess the crowd at Fight Klub wasn't tryna learn Chinese.
#5. Cassidy vs Freeway
Why it's memorable: An up-and-coming Cassidy rips an already famous Freeway.
Best line: "Throw on a beat." (Freeway)
Complex says: Cassidy earned his stripes battling dudes in Philly, but he gained street fame from destroying Freeway in this lopsided battle. Free's mistake was agreeing to battle acapella since everyone knows his delivery works best over a hard hitting beat. Which is probably why by the end of it, he was begging for one. Cassidy would later boast about the battle on his second album saying, "The punchlines I put on the street/Even made Freeway say, 'Put on a beat.'"
#4. The "WTF Did He Say?" Guy vs The "WTF Face" Girl
Why it's memorable: Dudes spits too many "WTF?" lines.
Best line: "You just mad
#3. Eli Porter vs Envy
Why it's memorable: Because Eli Porter is that amazing.
Best line: "I'ma let you know who the best by the hour/He's like Rosie O'Donnell at a bi-sexual bridal shower." (Eli Porter)
Complex says: The most bizarre thing about this battle is that by the looks of it, a bunch of kids from Chamblee High School in Atlanta created the "Iron Mic Freestyle Battle" and pretty much went and got Eli Porter, who may or may not be mentally handicapped, to rap for them. But rather than be the butt of the joke, Porter caught the holy ghost of hip-hop and spit an unbelievable verse.
#2. Charles Hamilton vs Briana
Why it's memorable: Because Charles Hamilton gets punched in the face.
Best line: "I won before I even opened my mouth." (Charles Hamilton)
Complex says: Which part of this video is funnier? The fact that Charles Hamilton's girlfriend Briana says, "Since I saw Drake spit off his Blackberry, I feel like I can do that too since I'm not a rapper"? Or the fact that Hamilton tries to keep rapping after getting punched? Aww fuck it, who are we kidding? We all know the funniest part is that it lead to this gif. Charles Hamilton: This is your life.
#1. E-N-J Vs. Nyckz
Why it's memorable: Someone gets punched in the face.
Best line: "Oh you mad 'cause I'm stylin' on you?" (Nyckz)
Complex says: What to say about "Stylin' On You"? That it gave birth to the Internet meme "Stylin' On You"? That it began the trend of battles turning into people getting punched in the face? How about the fact that people remember Nyckz (who got punched) better than E-N-J (who did the punching). That's what you call a two-piece fail.
