The fan sign is a relic in the pretend Museum of Fandom, and is one of the oldest forms of fan expression, next to clapping, booing, and the throwing of objects onto the field. Fan expression has branched out in the Twitter Age, with just about every fan alive becoming fantasy owner/GM. We appreciate the fan sign though, because it's a throwback—an original. There are, however, plenty of weird, creepy, offensive, racist, and just plain wrong signs out there. In the wide-world of soccer, the signs are often weirder and more offensive than imaginable. To really be disappointed in the morality of the soccer fan, check out Gallery: The Most Inappropriate Fan Signs in Soccer.

Back in 2007, when David Beckham was more of a novelty attraction for American sports fans, people were seriously pissed when he would sit out with "injuries." Not sure exactly what the American holding the sign is criticizing though...

UEFA would fine Ajax €10,000 for the banner, deeming it "display of a provocative and inappropriate banner." It was displayed during a Manchester City-Ajax match in Manchester last season to draw the ire of Man City, who's run by oil-rich Sheikh Mansour.

Fan of: Stabaek

In a Norwegian soccer game in 2007, the home fans began chanting "Go home, like in '45," and showed off the banner above, which says, "we're going home at 19:45." It was all directed at the visiting team's coach Uwe Rösler, a German. The Norwegian FA didn't find the WWII joke too amusing, and fined the home club for it.
