"Civilization II" Creator "Can't Believe" He Spawned a Perpetual Nuclear Holocaust

We reported earlier this week that a 10-year-long game of the 1996 PC strategy game Civilization II had turned the world into a "hellish nightmare of suffering and destruction", according to the game's player.

"There are 3 remaining super nations in the year 3991 A.D, each competing for the scant resources left on the planet after dozens of nuclear wars have rendered vast swaths of the world uninhabitable wastelands," wrote reddit user Lycerius of his decade-long game.

As the head of his empire (the Celts), Lycerius has for thousands of virtual years done what he thought was necessary to preserve his power. But Sid Meier, the mastermind behind the Civilization series, told the Associated Press that he's surprised a game has lasted this long.

"My first thought was, 'Wow! I can't believe anyone has been playing Civ II for that long,'" he said. "It's been more than 15 years since we released that game, and I don't think any of us expected a decade-long game would come out of it. It would be amazing if we could come back in 2025 and find out if someone's had a 10-year game of Civ V going."

So? Who's going to start their game today and report back in ten years? Let us know in the comments or on Twitter.
