A Dying Woman Used Oculus Rift to See the Outside World One Last Time

A dying woman's granddaughter programmed an Oculus Rift to help her see the outside world a final time.

If you're one of those skeptics who was unsure about the usefulness of Oculus Rift, this story might change your mind. A woman who was dying of a terminal cancer that made her so weak she had to stay inside used the device to explore the outside world again for a final time.

Roberta Fistenberg's granddaughter, Priscilla, who is a game artist and developer, got her hands on a Rift dev kit, which she used to program a view of the world outside Roberta's home. Using the Oculus Tuscany demo, Priscilla built a world that her grandmother could navigate from her house. She also added Google Street View and other features that Roberta could interact with.

"You can be in pain but, somehow, when you see a blue butterfly reach out to kiss you...it makes you realize we are all a part of this world...," said Roberta, who passed away weeks after visiting Tuscany through her Oculus Rift.
