Kicking and tossing the SOCCKET ball -- created by New York-based startup Uncharted Play -- for 30 minutes will generate three hours of light. Besides being an airless and durable soccer ball, the SOCCKET is also a portable generator. The sphere holds a small pendulum, which uses the kinetic energy created by play to power the rechargeable battery inside.
Children and parents can then plug in an attachable LED Lamp for hours of environmentally friendly light.
After numerous prototypes, testing and development stages, and corporate backing rounds, the SOCCKET is now seeking support on Kickstarter. The money raised on the crowdfunding platform will cover manufacturing and transportation costs to get to balls to resource-poor areas globally. So far, the company has already reached families in South Africa, Mexico and Brazil with earlier prototypes.
The project has raised $65,900 of its $75,000 goal to date with 11 days left on Kickstarter.
