British sculptor Jason DeCaires Taylor is known for installing his work in unusual places, namely deep below the surface of the ocean. In the past, he's even collaborated with street artist Invader. His most recent series of underwater sculptures rests among sea creatures on the ocean floor of the Caribbean Sea. The sculptures have attracted all sorts of algae, seaweed growth, and marine life, turning them into artificial coral reefs. To document this amazing transformation, Taylor has produced a series of over 100 photos of all the sculptures, which he's compiled in a book published by Chronicle called The Underwater Museum: The Submerged Sculptures of Jason DeCaires Taylor, edited by Carlo McCormick and Helen Scales.
If you've already traveled to the best underwater locations on the planet or immersed yourself in awesome photographs shot while the photographer was holding his breath, then DeCaires' new release is for you. His underwater art installation covers over 420 square meters below sea level and weighs over 200 tons. Sure, there are plenty of unusual spaces where you can find art, ranging from remote islands to the inside of toilets, but this Underwater Museum takes the art of installation to the next level. Here are 10 Incredible Images of an Underwater Museum.Â
