The Most Stylish Celebrities of 2013

Ranking the "most stylish" celebrities is always tricky. Beyond the obvious aspects of subjectivity, influence, and pushing boundaries, there's also something we call stylist's magic. Differentiating celebs' personal styles versus what their stylists pick out for them is getting tougher and tougher. But still, when a guy has great personal style, it shines through.

Certain rappers, athletes, actors, and singers didn't make the cut for this year-end roundup, even if they made it onto previous lists. Why? Mostly because the competition is stiffer—this is the best of the best dressed. It isn't enough that a rapper was an #influencer and made fans Google Tom Ford, or that an actor showed up to a red carpet premiere in a killer suit that one time. It takes consistency, growth, and just looking damn good in dope clothes.

There debate on who should and who shouldn't make this list will always be a hot one, and peoples' thoughs and opinions are always welcome to the conversation. But for the reasons listed above, these were The Most Stylish Celebrities of 2013.

The fact that A$AP Ferg is part of the Mob, the current most stylish crew in hip-hop, isn't what landed him on this list. Instead, it was his own personal style that is cohesive with his crew but stands out as his own. He doesn't dress like A$AP Rocky and has his own rock, grunge look going. His vintage Tommy Hilfiger jackets are pretty dope, too.

This summer, he made it known he was one of the best emcees of the year when he dropped the much-anticipated Trap Lord. But he's also made it clear that there are fans out there looking to him for more than just music. His collaboration with BAPE sold out instantly. *Prayer hands* If Kanye's right in saying that rappers are the new rockstars, then big things are in store for Fergenstein's rap/rock star look in the next year.

For most of 2013, Andrew Garfield was on set shooting Spider-Man 2. When he wasn't in his red and blue tights, he killed it in well-tailored suits and designer gear by Tom Ford and Alexander McQueen on various red carpets. Still, it has to be noted that he was in his best when casual. Garfield's style is effortless; he always looks like he just threw on whatever was at the top of his laundry pile, and if you can pull that off, bravo.

Eddie Redmaybe is the reason your girl has print outs of Burberry ad campaigns, and why you considered wearing a green velvet suit. The young British actor stayed fairly lowkey this year, perhaps only hitting the red carpet for other Les Miserable premieres, but that didn't affect his style at all. Case in point: plaid suits, Thom Browne, and basically everything else he kills it in regularly.

Earlier this week, Harry Styles won the British Style Award, beating out David Beckham, Kate Moss, the Duchess of Cambridge, and model Cara Delevingne. Though there's been talk about whether or not he should've won, there's no doubt the kid embodies both modern and classic British style. He wears slim suits, blazers, and his usual jeans paired with T-shirts. There's something rock and roll about his look yet sophisticated enough he could still drink his tea with his pinky up, if he wanted to. Deny all you want that you haven't sung along to a One Direction song before. It won't change a thing.

What's most impressive about David Beckham's style now is that it's age appropriate without being boring. After all the leather trench coats and braids he's rocked in the past, he's finally learned what works for him, and what works often includes some of the best menswear brands. Beckham may have hung up his cleats this past spring, but he'll remain in the conversation if he keeps this up.

Truth be told, Idris Elba probably flies under the radar most times, but there's no denying the British actor is dapper as fuck. And yes, dapper is the only way his style could really be described.

Idris, who starred in this year's hit BBC television series Luther and a very topical film based on the late-great Nelson Mandela, wears tons of suits, polo shirts, trousers, and crewneck (sometimes v-neck) sweatshirts. He says he's inspired by his grandfather's style, admitting that he "loves looking" at the old man's "pictures to see how dressed." It shows. Elba's style is timeless, and looked as great in 2013 as it will next year.

Justin Timberlake caused a media frenzy when he announced his third studio album after a six-year hiatus from music. On March of this year, 20/20 Experience dropped, followed by numerous performances, Jimmy Fallon skits, the "Legends of the Summer" tour with Jay Z, and a certain 'NSYNC reunion that made women all over the world cry of joy. He also emerged as a new artist, looking much better and leaving his braids, durags, vest, and sweatbands in the past. He may have roped in Tom Ford for a 600-piece tour wardrobe to ensure he was on his "Suit & Tie" shit, but he also spend a good amount of the year in Alexander Wang and Jordans. That's a combo to aspire to.

John Mayer reemerged from his short hiatus (following vocal surgery) and announced this summer he was releasing his sixth studio album, Paradise Valley. He went back on tour and once again brought fans—mostly women—to arenas and stadium. Though visvim has been around for years, and he himself had been a huge fan of the brand for a while, he took it to new heights in 2013. The singer stepped out in head-to-toe visvim looks so often he even had people estimating what his collection may be worth. Basically, he bodied the year one kimono and denim shirt at a time.

Ryan Gosling may have peaked in terms of style in 2011, but the actor did not disappoint this year. Gosling, who starred in Gangster Squad and The Place Beyond the Pines, didn't change his look much. It's still built around simplicity, well tailored suits, and solid heritage clothing. In his case, change wasn't necessary, anyway. The key to his steez is consistency, a deceptively difficult thing to nail.

"I feel comfortable being a style icon," Kendrick Lamar said in an interview earlier this year. "That's something new. I've been hearing that for quite some time this past year."

Kendrick, a style icon? Believe it. The self-proclaimed King of New York really started to improve his style in 2012, but it wasn't until this year that he really settled on a look and perfected it. His trajectory took him from rocking hoodies to designer gear. Then, following his much-talked about "Control" verse, started rocking just T-shirts and Nike Cortezes (or so he claims). Now, his style has become a good mix of the best of everything he's worn in the past.

Most football players simply can't dress well. Yet Victor Cruz pretty much stands alone in the NFL. He wears tons of designer brands and expensive gear—like, the $33,000 watch Jay Z designed for Barneys and Balmain motorcycle leather jackets—without abusing logos and looking like someone who just rocks whatever has the heftiest price tag. Besides that, he's also heavy in the streetwear game, and frequently come through in Kith and Pyrex Vision. Cruz definitely positioned himself this year as one of the most stylish athletes and celebrities of the year. Dude was even spotted with Public School when they won CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund award. Now if only the New York Giants could have a better season...

This past September, G-Dragon dropped one of the best pop albums in the last five years with Coup D'Etat. Though that's definitely a feat to be proud of, the Korean rapper has also become known for his style. Even Google refers to him as a "fashion icon", following titles like rapper, singer, songwriters etc. The obvious style chameleon changes his look with the time, trends, and his moods. Some of his favorite brands in 2013 included Saint Laurent (but only under Hedi Slimane), En Noir, Rick Owens, and Thom Browne. Say what you want about his out-there look, but G-Dragon definitely has a style that no other celeb is pulling off, and is certainly leading the charge down a very stylish path for the Eastern (and perhaps soon, Western) hemisphere.

Simply put, there isn't anyone in the industry who dresses like A$AP Rocky, even if some try to emulate the rapper's style. He rocks the dopest and rarest Raf Simons, Rick Owens, Hood By Air, and brands you haven't even heard of yet. And he isn't afraid to take risks. Flacko has definitely been a leader in merging the worlds of hip-hop and fashion, and if you doubt that then you simply haven't been paying attention. Simply put, Rocky has created a lane of his own.

Kanye West sparked a lot of conversations this year. He became a father, proposed to Kim Kardashian, dropped the much-talked about Yeezus album, and put on an excellent Yeezus Tour. More recently, he's been known for his fashion "rants", and he just announced his new partnership with adidas.

But, of course, his outfits were part of those conversations, too. This year, he, along with John Mayer, brought more popularity to visvim, as well as introduced Stutterheim to the world. He also dropped a collaboration with A.P.C. and Yeezus Tour merch that broke the Internet and had everyone going crazy. Not to mention, with his Margiela masks, Confederate flag-heave tour merch, and wild outfis, Kanye pretty much forced the world to make fashion a heavy part of the coverage surrounding him.

Pharrell seemed to have an even bigger year than the last. Several months ago, he dropped the catchy "Blurred Lines" and "Get Lucky," both of which went completely viral and were some of the most played songs this year. Just yesterday, it was announced he was nominated for seven Grammys.

He's also a big topic in fashion conversations, mainly for his unique sense of style. Also, 2013 marked the decade anniversary for Billionaire Boys Club, a brand that helped change the streetwear landscape with Pharrell at the helm. But personal style-wise, P constantly reinvents himself, but when he finds something he likes, he sticks with it until he finds the next thing that piques his interest. That is a habit that only guys with confidence in their dope style tend to pull off, and in 2013, Pharrell taught everyone who was paying attention about this advanced means of flourishing.
