Age: Died in 1849 at age 71
This French artist devoted her life to painting, abandoning a successful career in the Academy in order to paint portraits of noblemen. The daughter of painter Ferdinande Joseph Godefroid, her work has hung in the Louvre since the early 19th century. While quite respected by the elite aristocracy that was her artistic circle, she was largely forgotten following her death. Her overshadowing in the canon is likely owing to her spotty biography, mostly composed of anecdotal accounts by acquaintances—and, of course, her gender. Her remarkable portraits include a true sense of character.
