Home decorating TV shows may not be the most exciting type of reality TV out there, but they have the added benefit of teaching you about design, so you don't feel like you totally wasted half an hour. Okay, you might not be interested in making your own spray painted lampshade or sledge hammering your walls in order to make more space, but there are some valid tips you can learn from these TV shows. It doesn't hurt that the TV networks cast over-enthusiastic hosts who make the most mundane construction activities appear as though they are changing the world. His show Color Splash is centered around the interior designer sprucing up bland living spaces with vibrant colors and out-of-the-box ideas. He is a charmer, and you can tell that every house owner falls in love with him by the time the show is over—often screaming out of joy from his designs.

People might have been sad after the hit show Queer Eye For the Straight Guy was over, but we no longer need to lament its departure from TV. Filicia is all about making sure that the new homes truly reflect the personality of the house owners. He has a hilarious personality that plays well off of the eccentric homeowners.

Designed to Sell is focused on home improvement in order to make a property marketable. Since people can get too comfortable in their own homes, it is pretty easy to let things go. This Canadian TV show is great because it focuses on a totally different aspect of home improvement and decorating. It's hard to imagine how much can be done in such little time, but they always manage to surprise homeowners and viewers. They are considerate enough to provide the prices of their purchases so that the cheapskates can get an idea of how much a decent makeover costs.

Emily Henderson, who won Season 5 of Design Star, is the host of Secrets From a Stylist. She comes from a professional prop stylist background, so she has an intimate knowledge of an object's relationship with its overall setting. She usually renovates places owned by the more hip-oriented homeowners because of her modern and niche design aesthetic.

It's hard to believe that the Scott Brothers can be really good looking and really talented at the same time, but they seem to be just that. One brother is in charge of architecture while the other is in charge of design. They have a very casual approach to hosting, which makes Property Brothers feel less cheesy than the other home decor shows out there.

We would have liked the show more if we could see the work that was put into the renovations instead of their drama.

Let's be real: Divine Design was every mom's favorite TV show. Candice Olson knew how to transform any dump into a space that was both beautiful and functional. She wasn't into going over the top or being ultra modern. We wouldn't necessarily give her an A+ for entertainment, but we definitely recommend it for design inspiration.

Clean Sweep is a hoarder's nightmare. This show focuses on cleaning out peoples' homes, selling their extra junk, and renovating their space with the money that got at the yard sale. The most entertaining part of the show is when the homeowners and the host have to decide what is going to be kept and what could be sold. It is hilarious how attached people can get to such mundane objects.

TV Host: Keyshawn Johnson
TV Network: A&E

Keyshawn Johnson, a former NFL star, is an interior designer. Yep, you read that right. His show isn't that different from other home decor shows, but what makes it so special is the fact that the man used to play football and now looks at swatches of curtain fabric. This is to all the haters who think that jocks do not have artistic capabilities!

TV Host: Cortney and Robert Novogratz

Cortney and Robert Novogratz have a great interior design aesthetic that encapsulates both a vintage and modern looks into one's home. They are fans of using unconventional design methods, like plastering graffiti on walls and chalkboard paint on the ceiling, that make everyone's home look incredibly unique. Home by Novogratz stands out because the hosts aren't just trying to make homes look like they come straight out of the catalogue. Most homes look like the homeowners could have made the spaces themselves.

Antonio Ballatore, winner of Season 4 of Design Star on HGTV, is the rock star of interior design TV shows. His work is anything but modest, and his makeovers are always creative, innovative, and have plenty of personality—just like the host himself. We are not surprised that Ballatore comes from New York City, the mecca of loud and creative thinkers.

Reality shows that feature competitions usually reward winners with some money. The prize on Design Star, which is now called HGTV Star, beats any other prize on a reality show because the winner gets to have their on design show on HGTV. They always manage to choose people with poignant personalities, and the show has fantastic judges like fashion designer Cynthia Rowley and Divine Design's Candice Olson.

Everyone secretly wishes that While You Were Out would come to their house, uh...while they were out. The concept of the show was that a friend or a partner would send the homeowner out of town for a day or two so that Evan Farmer and his team could completely make over their place. The team had plenty of charisma and was very entertaining, but the reaction of the homeowner was always the best part.

It goes without saying that Bravo knows how to make great, trashy television. Million Dollar Decorators is a docu-series that provides entertainment and insight into the world of luxury interior design. These designers have strong personalities and strong ideas, so they do hit walls when they don't all agree. We recommend it mostly for the laughs but also for some understanding of the industry that makes millionaires' homes so glamorous.

We wouldn't say that Design on a Dime had the best design chops in terms of aesthetics, but it certainly was impressive how much the designers could do so much with such little money. The show is great inspiration for those who want to improve their homes on a smaller budget. You don't need to spend a million dollars to look like a million dollars.

Queer Eye for the Straight Guy did a lot more than makeover homes. They made over men's lives through fashion, culture, and food. They ended up winning an Emmy Award for Outstanding Reality Program in 2004 due to their enthusiasm, great sense of humor, and impeccable taste. It's a bummer that this show still isn't going on.

Clean House might be the most hilarious home improvement show on television. These rooms are so bad they would make your teenage brother gag at the sight of them. It's hard to believe that people allow themselves to get so dirty and unorganized. The best part of the show was the hostess, Niecy Nash, who always knew the right thing to say to best describe the nightmare rooms. Style eventually replaced Nash with the Cosby Show veteran Tempestt Bledsoe.

Who can forget the most emotional home makeover show on the face of our planet? Ty Bennington, who started out from Trading Spaces, has an undeniable enthusiasm. The best part, however, was the reaction from the families when they saw their home for the first time. We can't deny that we have a shed a few tears while watching America's favorite makeover TV show.

Trading Spaces was one of the most popular interior design shows on TLC. The concept of the show was that friends would trade houses and decorate each other's places based on what they think suits the other person best. Friends might know what is best for each other, but sometimes they should just leave it to the professionals. This show should have lasted longer.
