Ah, science-fiction. Hands down one of the best genres there is—but you have to be willing to accept a few ridiculous aspects to fully enjoy it. Chief among them: the costumes. In the history of science-fiction throughout all the laughably bad movies to the indisputable classics, a belief exists that in order to properly display the future setting, or alternative galaxy or whatever, the characters should, nay they must, look absolutely nuts. Disney offers a reminder of that notion with today's release of John Carter, which finds the titular hero on an alien planet, fighting alien beasts...in a loincloth. Sigh.
