On Monday night, Twitter was briefly set aflame when it appeared that Miami Heat center Hassan Whiteside, who is on the verge of being a free agent, had decided to sign with the Lakers. A series of DMsΒ that appeared to be from Whiteside's account surfaced, saying that he would be "moving to the LA area pretty soon."

The messages were quickly revealed to be fakes, as was the account that allegedly received them.

It was then that Twitter proceeded to do what it does best β€” poke merciless fun at the situation. Parodies were created.

Because Hassan Whiteside would definitely mention "I'm Hassan Whiteside" in a DM.

Man, I love free agency. Brings out the crazy in Twitter.

Others pondered more existential questions.

Some pointed out the obvious.

While, of course, many people just couldn't resist cracking jokes.

As for Whiteside's actual status, he is sticking by his statement that "we're going to see what happens."Β
