Mastretta, the fledgling Mexican sports car manufacturer, has ceased production of its MXT roadster in the wake of “clumsy, irresponsible, and negligent management” practices.
In a recent press release, José Carlos Mastretta Guzmán explained that the mismanagement of funds by two of the group’s majority shareholders – Mexico Ventures and Corporacion Mexicana de Inversiones de Capital – caused Mastretta’s resources to dry up in only eight months. Subsequently, production of the MXT will be halted indefinitely until the future of the company is decided.
It’s an unfortunate end for a company with such great potential, especially one with such an evocative name. Sure, Mastretta might have been the butt of a Top Gear joke, but the idea behind the company is a noble one. Guzmán claims his main inspiration for Mastretta was to encourage innovation in Mexico. We hope it still does.
