The 10 Most Badass American Sports Teams of All Time (Video)

In honor of the Fourth of July, we already hit you with the 25 Hottest Female American Athletes of All Time. Today, we're keeping the patriotic theme going with the most badass U.S. national teams in sports history. Not many things are more American than kicking the asses of other nations on the playing field. From the Dream Team stuntin' at the '92 Olympics to the 1980 “Miracle on Ice” hockey squad shocking the world, our nation has had its share of great moments at international sports events. So, in honor of America's Independence Day, here are the 10 Most Badass American Sports Teams of All Time...

EVENT: 1994 FIFA World Cup held in the U.S.
COMPLEX SAYS: The '94 U.S. soccer team put on for their city by making it to the round of 16, their deepest run in the World Cup since 1934. Led by players like Alexi Lalas (peep the badass red hair), Cobi Jones, and Eric Wynalda, the Americans tied Switzerland 1-1 in their first match then beat a heavily favored Colombia team 2-1 to advance to the knockout stage. The victory over Colombia was aided by an own goal by Andres Escobar, who was murdered in his home country 10 days later. Damn, R.I.P. #itsjustagame

EVENT: 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta
COMPLEX SAYS: What's so badass about gymnastics? A brief history lesson on the Magnificent Seven will answer your question. Led by Shannon Miller, the '96 squad became the first team to win a gold medal for the U.S. in the women's gymnastics team competition. The defining moment came here as Kerri Strug fought off an ankle injury to stick the landing on one leg and advance to the All-Around finals. More badass than a lot of today's male athletes? No doubt, son.

EVENT: 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa
COMPLEX SAYS: Oh, the day that Landycakes transformed into LandyKING. Well, at least for a little while. With this goal against Algeria, the 2010 team became the first U.S. squad to win its group since the 1930 team. The U.S. would go on to lose to Ghana 2-1 in the next round but this team has set the bar for years to come. See y'all in 2014.

EVENT: 1960 Winter Olympics in Squaw Valley, Calif.
COMPLEX SAYS: Yeah, most people already know about the 1980 "Miracle on Ice" team, but these dudes were the OGs. The 1960 men's hockey team beat both heavily-favored Canada and the USSR, before the gold medal game where they dismantled Czechoslovakia 9-4. Ouch. Slow down, son. You killing 'em.

EVENT: 1999 FIFA Women's World Cup in Pasadena, Calif.
COMPLEX SAYS: This squad led by Mia Hamm, goalkeeper Briana Scurry, and Brandi "Sports Bras, FTW" Chastain became the second U.S. team in history to win the FIFA World Cup. In a game that set a record for the highest attendance at a women's sports event (90,185), Brandi Chastain scored this penalty kick to secure the U.S.'s victory over China in the tournament final. Kicking ass in sports and stripping? Doesn't get much more American than that!

EVENT: 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing
COMPLEX SAYS: Led by Michael Phelps, who set an Olympic record with eight gold medals at that year's games, the U.S. swim came in first on the medal count with 31 total medals including 12 gold. The team's biggest highlight came here in the 4x100 meter freestyle relay, as Jason Lezak came back to take the lead from France's Alain Bernard in the final 25 meters. No doping here, well kinda, but the fact that Phelps likes to spark up kush once in a while just makes this accomplishment even more badass. #justsayin'

EVENT: 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin
COMPLEX SAYS: Ahh, the event where Jesse Owens and the U.S. track team complete shitted on Hitler and Nazi Germany. The U.S. team showed up in Berlin and led the track and field (or athletics) medal count with 25 total medals including 14 gold. Owens took home four of those gold medals, and Hitler decided to skip out on the medal presentations. Oh, you mad cause we stylin' on you?

EVENT: 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid
COMPLEX SAYS: The 1980 U.S. Men's hockey team was full of young, unknown hockey players. Not surprisingly, many doubted those guys would to get anywhere close to earning a medal. Somehow though, the United States team pulled out a victory over the much older and experienced Soviet Union before going on to beat Finland in the gold medal game. One of the biggest sports upsets and greatest sports calls of all time. Underdog swag on a hundred thousand, trillion.

EVENT: 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona
COMPLEX SAYS: The Dream Team was truly one of the most dominant teams in Olympic history. The squad which featured 11 NBA Hall of Famers (FOH, Christian Laettner), won games by an average of 44 points before taking the gold medal in a victory over Croatia. Many opponents even asked stars like MJ, Magic, Bird, and Charles Barkley for autographs after being embarrassed on the court. #stunt101

EVENT: 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City
COMPLEX SAYS: The U.S. track and field team dominated that year's events by taking home 12 gold medals and breaking five records. However, the most defining moment of the games came as Tommie Smith and John Carlos, gold and bronze medalists for the 200 meters event, went up on the medal podium with black gloves raised in protest of the injustices African Americans were facing back home. Winning Olympic medals? Pretty badass. The Black Power salute on the world's stage despite the consequences? Supremely badass.
