In recent years, updates to Nike's Air Max sneakers have been centered around their uppers—some breathable Flyknit here, some supportive Flywire there—but the key feature of the sneaker has remained largely unchanged. Until now.

The Air Max VaporMax was one of the many sneakers debuted at today's Nike Innovation event, and from the looks of things, it's worth every bit of the wait. For the first time ever, Nike's created an Air Max unit that functions both as a midsole and outsole, eliminating the need for a protective rubber layer.

Less rubber means more Air, and the VaporMax promises to be as comfortable underfoot as it is visually striking. This first of its kind Air unit sits atop a Flyknit upper, helping the VaporMax further push boundaries with its lightweight construction and unique pattern.

Unfortunately, Nike has not provided any release information on this model, but you can sign up for Nike+ to be notified as soon as it's available.
