Movie: The Squid and the Whale (2005)
Director: Noah Baumbach
Stars: Jesse Eisenberg, Laura Linney, Jeff Daniels

Noah Baumbach's period drama The Squid and the Whale pins down the squirming weirdness of budding male sexuality in a way that no contemporary film has come close to touching, but it's most distressing moment has nothing to do with weird masturbation.

No, the most revolting scene comes near the end, when the older brother (Jesse Eisenberg) walks in on his dad (Jeff Daniels) forcing himself on one of his students (Anna Paquin). The film has been building to the rift between father and son, and this serves one of the last straws. In a quick shot, you hear Daniels' character say, "Put me in your mouth," while he appears to be pushing Paquin's shoulders down. The naked desire in the command is repugnant, and her resistance beyond troubling. —RS
