The enormously influential (and consistently dopeStar Trek franchise will celebrate its 50th anniversary this year with the filming of a new series helmed by Hannibal showrunner Bryan Fuller, Deadline reports. "Before seeing a frame of the television series, the Star Trek universe lit my imagination on fire," Fuller said in a press release. "It is without exaggeration a dream come true to be crafting a brand new iteration of Star Trek with fellow franchise alum Alex Kurtzman and boldly going where no Star Trek series has gone before."

The new CBS series, as previously reported, will have its premiere via the increasingly antiquated TV format in January of next year before finishing the rest of its run exclusively on CBS All Access. "Bringing Star Trek back to television means returning it to its roots, and for years those roots flourished under Bryan's devoted care," Kurtzman tells Deadline, referencing the Pushing Daisies creator's early years as a writer on the franchise spin-offs Deep Space Nine and Voyager. "His encyclopedic knowledge of Trek canon is surpassed only by his love for Gene Roddenberry's optimistic future."

Fuller's other televised commitments, including American Gods and NBC's Amazing Stories reboot, are not believed to be impacted by the addition of some slightly more space-related work. Though plot details surrounding this new CBS take on Roddenberry's universe remain relatively scarce, Entertainment Weekly notes that Fuller has been slowly but surely sprinkling his franchise ideas across years' worth of interviews including some pretty compelling stuff about Patrick Stewart and The Next Generation.
