USA Is Delaying the 'Mr. Robot' Season Finale in Light of Today's Horrific Shooting (UPDATE)

Apparently a scene in the finale bears uncomfortable similarities to today's events.

In the wake of today's tragic shooting in Virginia, which left WDBJ news anchor Alison Parker and cameraman Adam Ward dead at the hands of an unstable former co-worker, USA Network has announced they will delay the season finale of their new popular series, Mr. Robot. Robot follows a young cyber-vigilante hacker who's recruited by an anarchist group to take down an evil corporation.

Grantland's Andy Greenwald is reporting the finale, originally set to air tonight, contained a graphic scene that's "similar in nature" to today's events and as such USA is pushing it back a week. This is far from the first time TV has reacted accordingly to sensitive events. Back in 1999 the third season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, for example, delayed two episodes that would go on to become classics—one where a mysterious student threatens to kill people at the high school and the finale where said high school is literally blown up to save the world—because of their proximity to Columbine.

Having seen it, I agree that USA was right to reconsider. The finale is excellent, though. Don't expect that to change, even with an edit.

On Thursday, IFC announced a delay of an episode of the new Fred Armisen series Documentary Now! entitled "Dronez." According to Variety, the episode is a parody of Vice News and reportedly depicts journalists being killed. The episode will be replaced with another, though no specifics regarding a new air date for "Dronez" were made immediately available.
