The daughter of a California sheriff's lieutenant shot her younger sister with their father's service weapon by accident this week, authorities say.

According to the Fresno Bee, the Madera County sheriff's lieutenant was getting ready for work at his Fresno, Calif. home on Friday morning when his 10-year-old daughter picked up the gun and discharged it by accident. The magazine had reportedly been removed, but a round remained in the chamber. His 8-year-old daughter was subsequently shot in the torso.

The girl was rushed to Community Regional Medical Center, where she was in stable condition on Friday. The lieutenant has not been placed on administrative leave, but Fresno Police Lt. Steve Gomez  said the Fresno County District Attorney’s Office will decide if he will face any legal ramifications.
