An accused drug smuggler allegedly opened fire on U.S. Marshals who entered his Queens apartment with a battering ram yesterday evening, officials say.

The New York Daily News reports that seven U.S. Marshals raided the man's Springfield Gardens apartment around 11 p.m. last night. The unidentified man, who they sought for cocaine smuggling and assault, fled to his backyard, where shot at them using an automatic weapon.

He finally surrendered after being shot in the left hand by officers who returned fire, and authorities tackled and placed him in handcuffs as he walked out of his apartment. The Daily News adds that no law enforcement members were injured during the arrest.
