In a story that shatters everything we thought we knew about The Notebook and the unassailable romantic bond between Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams, director Nick Cassavetes revealed in an interview that one day during shooting Gosling asked for McAdams to be fired.

Here is Cassavetes’ version of this unspeakable event, as told to VH1:

“Maybe I’m not supposed to tell this story, but they were really not getting along one day on set. Really not. And Ryan came to me, and there’s 150 people standing in this big scene, and he says, 'Nick, come here.’ And he’s doing a scene with Rachel and he says, 'Would you take her out of here and bring in another actress to read off camera with me? ... I can’t do it with her. I’m just not getting anything from this.'”

This opening salvo led to a meeting offscreen with a producer, which led to a screaming match between Gosling and McAdams, which led to them making up, which then led to them dating off-screen. Maybe they’re just a couple passionate people?

Cassavetes said that “They had it out. I think Ryan respected her for standing up for her character and Rachel was happy to get that out in the open.” Hooray for mutual respect! We can now go back to loving the movie again.
