Tourists got a scare while visiting Chicago's Willis Tower (or Sears Tower, for all of you nostalgia freaks) last night when cracks appeared on one the boxes of The Ledge, the attraction that resides on the building's 103rd floor.
According to NBC Chicago, Alejandro Garibay was inside of the glass structure with his brother and two cousins around 10 p.m. last night when they heard cracking.
Believing that they had just heard their death rattle, the family, in town from California, departed immediately and informed employees. "I walked them over so they could see and they were totally shocked and asked us to step away and then proceeded to start calling staff and techs and I don't know who else," Garibay explained. "When we pulled our phones to start recording and take pictures they asked us to leave right away.
However, a spokesman for the building said that protective coating cracked, not the glass itself. "This coating does not affect the structural integrity of The Ledge in any way," Brian Rehme told NBC Chicago. "Occasionally, the coating will crack, as it is designed to in order to protect the surface of the glass."
The Ledge, which opened in 2009, remains open today. Despite the assurance that what happened last night was not almost the end of he and his loved ones, Garibay called it a "Crazy feeling and experience." They'll always remember this trip to Chicago.
