Appearing on The Late Show with David Letterman, former How I Met Your Mother and current Hedwig and the Angry Inch star Neil Patrick Harris discussed HIMYM’s controversial finale and the fact that Harris—gasp!—actually liked it.

While the anger from fans and critics alike has been overwhelming, Harris said that he himself was a “big proponent” and “big fan” of the show’s conclusion. While we will forever disagree with him, we’ll admit this: Harris does make a compelling point when he says that “sometimes peoples’ growth doesn’t really mean that they grow up.”

And it’s certainly true, character development and growth doesn’t have to mean that the person ends up living only one certain kind of life. Without spoiling the HIMYM ending for those who have yet to see it, we’ll just say that Harris’ comments seem to apply mostly to one character, though, and don’t totally explain away the other major, controversial twist.
