Hype has been growing for Ryan Gosling’s directorial debut, Lost River, and yesterday it was revealed that the film will play at this year’s prestigious Cannes Film Festival. The movie stars a roster of talent including Christina Hendricks, Saoirse Ronan, Eva Mendes, and Ben Mendelsohn. Not much has been revealed about the plot, but, courtesy of Thompson on Hollywood, we do know the film will revolve around a mother falling into a dark underworld, while her son finds an underwater utopia.

The site is also showing off two new images from the movie that set a truly bizarre tone. There is absolutely no context for either image, but the visuals alone echo the works of surrealist directors like David Lynch, David Cronenberg, and maybe even a little Terry Gilliam. Take a look at the images below to see what Gosling has in store for Cannes audiences this May.
