The man obviously made a poor decision, but this sentence is a bit much, isn't it?

A Texas man will spend the next 18 months behind bars, endlessly contemplating his decision to urinate on the Alamo.

The Smoking Gun reports that 23-year-old Daniel Athens of El Paso, Texas was sentenced to 18 months in state prison yesterday after pleading guilty to criminal mischief in February for peeing on the Alamo. The public urination incident took place in April 2012, when an Alamo Ranger witnessed an obviously drunk Athens putting his penis back into his pants while standing in an area that had been roped off.

Further inspection revealed a "puddle on the original mortar of the Shrine." Perhaps the state took the offense so seriously because of the damage that urine can cause the 250-year-old landmark:

None

A plea deal kept Athens from serving a full two years in prison, but he is not eligible for parole and will have to pay $4,000 in restitution.

The lesson here is don't mess with Texas.
