Today, Showtime announced that Nurse Jackie has been renewed for a seventh season. Awesome news, especially as it comes even before the the sixth season has premiered—Showtime is clearly confident in the show's stay power.

According to The Hollywood ReporterPeter Facinelli, who plays Dr. Fitch "Coop" Cooper, will not return as a regular character for season seven, probably because he's already cast as the lead in NBC's family political drama pilot Odyssey.

"In the twilight of season six, Peter asked to be released from his contract to pursue new creative challenges. Nothing will eclipse the incredible contribution he made to the success of Nurse Jackie since the dawn of the show," showrunner Clyde Phillips and executive producer Richie Jackson, told The Hollywood Reporter.

Since Showtime has already pulled the trigger on another season without the latest episodes even having been seen by the general public, hopefully that means the show may have lived up to some pretty high standards.

Then again, this is also the network that let Dexter run past season five.
