The Martin Luther King Day Weekend Tweet That Shouldn't Have Been Sent

Oof.

Here's a great precursor to Martin Luther King Day weekend. One Marine Corps unit was forced to made quick use of the Twitter's "Delete" feature after advising followers "don't be a lone shooter" over the next few days. Alas, it was too late.

The U.S. Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command (MARSOC) operates out of Camp Lejune in North Carolina and acts as an auxiliary team to the Marine Corps.  For anyone who confused as to why this might be considered offensive, Dr. King was assassinated at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis in April 1968. That's certainly not what the MARSOC wants its followers thinking of during the weekend prior to Dr. King's holiday.

ThinkProgress reached out to the MARSOC public affairs office, who confirmed that the tweet came from the official account, but were sparse with other details:

None

Always think before you tweet. Always.
