Christian Bale's Batman is infamous for a lot of things, but nothing moreso than his strange whisper/growl of a voice. "Does Batman have a sore throat?" everyone wondered. "Does Batman need a lozenge?"
No, no lozenge—in a new interview with MTV, Bale explained that the voice was actually the result of him not being able to fathom a guy like Bruce Wayne talking in a normal voice while wearing the Batsuit, because "what kind of guy walks around, dressed like a bat?"

Apparently, not everyone loved it in the beginning. Though the voice (obviously) went over well in the auditions, Bale explained that when he went home that night to tell his wife, Sibi Blazic, how it went. When he put on the voice for her, she wasn't exactly a fan:
