Director: Richard Linklater
Stars: Wiley Wiggins, Kim Krizan
Richard Linklater is nothing if not ambitious, and his 2001 animated film Waking Life might just be his most daring feature. The movie is a surreal study of dreams and consciousness illustarted by rotoscoped animation, which is a process where real figures are drawn over digitally. The movie meditates on subjects such as metaphysics and existentialism.
There is certainly a lot to take in here—sometimes even a bit too much—but you have to respect it. This is a movie that can be watched and admired for its unique animation, then re-watched for its themes, then re-watched again just to get the full picture. —JS
