Before CGI turned big screen animation into a largely homogeneous affair, Disney was the uncontested king of the medium, with movies like Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland, Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, and a whole host of others revolutionizing the industry. One of the most beloved installments in the Disney vault is 101 Dalmatians, which needs little explanation: It's about the misadventures of a litter of 99 puppies and their parents.
Of course there has to be a villain of the piece, and Disney created one of the all-time greats in the wicked Cruella De Vil, who is out to steal the puppies and use their fur for clothing.
Thanks to the physical comedy of the puppies and spastic nastiness that is Cruella De Vil, 101 Dalmatians remains of Disney's finest hand-animated entries. —JS
