15 College Athletes Who Got in Trouble Using Twitter

College athletes are often considered a shoe-in for a bright future in the pros. Many, however, tend to lose sight of the prize when social media gets involved. There have been a string of unfortunate situations where student athletes kept it too real on Twitter. Although many have apologized for their untimely remarks, these athletes were either suspended, stripped of their scholarship, or kicked out of their respective university altogether. School: Mississippi State University

When the red-shirt Freshman DJ Gardner tweeted his displeasure (profanity included!) about MSU basketball bureaucracy he was kicked off the team. I guess you got your wish, homie.

School: University of Miami

Don't expect to go to dinner with the president of the PR firm, tweet about it, and not get suspended. When All-American WR Ryan Spadola decided to refer to the Townson University football players as one of the most reviled words in English language, he was suspended by Lehigh University and would miss the quarterfinal match-up against North Dakota State. As reported by ESPN, the school subsequently held "a series of campus discussions on derogatory racial language and its impact."

A general rule of thumb within football organizations: Internal matters should stay private. But when the Texas Tech head coach was late, Marlon Williams felt he should speak his mind. His punishment? The third-string quarterback was sidelined for OSU's game against Nebraska and his Twitter account was deleted. No word on whether he's attending class.

After LSU won the SEC Championship Game in 2011 Tyrann Mathieu took to Twitter and declared his love for his girlfriend. There was just one problem with that: His three side-pieces did not approve. Media Take Out subsequently posted pictures (sent by Mathieu's alleged "jump offs") of the football star in comprimising positions with them. Bad press insued and Mathieu was disciplined by school officials.

So when WKU running back Antonio Andrews tweeted, "One thing I can say bout #UKfans is they loyal. No matter how sorry they team is they always support them. Can't say that bout #WKUfans smh," he was immediately sidelined for the upcoming game. Some comments are better left to yourself, bro.
