Any news about the upcoming new season of Arrested Development is good news, even one where creator Mitch Hurtwitz reveals that the whole cast of the show reassembled only once during filming of the new 13 or 14 episodes.
"The bigger story is the family has fallen apart at the start of our show," Hurwitz told USA Today in a new interview about the upcoming return of the series. "They all went their own way, without Michael holding them together, so they're left to their own devices, and they're not the most successful devices...you don't see them all together until you see the movie."
The function of this new season, he added, is to be the "first act to what we eventually want to do, which is a big movie" - and it would be the film that would feature a big Bluth family reunion. There's no guarantee the film will ever be released, however, though if the show does well on Netflix the possibility is definitely there.
"The show will look very different," Hurwitz continued. This means, he elaborated, that the season is being arranged as a "very, very complex puzzle," and, though it was shot out of sequence over the course of months, each episode is "not jumping from one thing to another; you're staying with one character." As previously reported, each of the new episodes is set to focus on one character with other cast members playing supporting roles.
Some other updates about the series: Star Michael Cera is now on the writing staff, new episodes should premiere on Netflix in May, and the Bluths are still "just as damaged, self-involved and self-righteous as ever." Good stuff.
