According to a list by Torrent Freak, HBO’s Game of Thrones was the most pirated TV show of 2012. The series’ top episode was downloaded 4.28 million times during the year, with most of these coming in within a week of the episode’s debut. More alarmingly for HBO is that its top-rated episode of Thrones brought in 4.2 million viewers, which is actually less than the amount of people that downloaded it during the course of the year.

The majority of the piracy came outside of the U.S., where Thrones is either delayed for foreign audiences or not available at all. The other shows that rounded out the list’s top-five were Dexter (3.85 million downloads for its top episode), The Big Bang Theory (3.2 million), How I Met Your Mother (2.96 million), and Breaking Bad (2.58 million).
