The 1960s and '70s in the U.S. were all about peace, (free) love, and a smorgasbord of drugs. Music was evolving in to something bigger than religion, and sticking it to the man was the mentality. Communal living and acoustic guitar playing on city streets were cool, and so were bell bottom jeans, tie-dye shirts, and the Frito Bandito.
But we're not reflecting on the hippie era for no good reason. Today also happens to be the 69th birthday of one of the most influential flower children of them all: Joni Mitchell. Joan Baez

Jade Castrinos

Grace Slick
Known as one of the first female rock stars, former model and "Acid Queen," Grace Slick was an influential figure in the psychedelic rock movement. Taking off during her Jefferson Airplane days, "The Chrome Nun," a nickname she was given by David Crosby, is for sure one hippie that is somebody to love.

Dubbed by Rolling Stone Magazine as "The Best Hippie Queen Earth Mother," Fleetwood Mac's Stevie Nicks was the perfect example of what a woman in the '70s should personify. When talking about style in the 1970s, you would be hard pressed not to bring up the bluesy rock singer. Her frazzled blonde hair, perfectly draped jackets, and kick-ass boots set a standard for fashion in her time.
Jane Fonda
Co-founding the Women's Media Center with fellow activist Gloria Steinem, Jane Fonda was one of the most famous figures of the '60s and '70s. In fact, she's infamous for getting arrested for being falsely accused of drug smuggling in 1970 after returning from an anti-Vietnam war protest.
Decades later, Fonda continues to be a vocal political activist, having voiced her opinions against the warn in Iraq and, amidst the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, joining forces with Women in Black, an anti-war group, against Israel's occupation of the West Bank and Gaza Strip.
Lisa Bonet
Lisa Bonet's wavy dreads, thrift shop style, and blasé attitude was what made the The Cosby Show just that much cooler. Something about Lisa gave her that Haight St. vibe and made her someone you'd also want to smoke a joint with. We don't think we need to list Gloria Steinem's physical attributes to notice her true beauty. Co-founder of Ms. Magazine, Steinem is widely regarded as the voice for women's rights.
Thanks to Steneim, Ms. Magazine is not just a magazine, it was a movement." In 1972, the mag published a story of the names of women who had received abortions before the procedure was legal. A year later, Roe v. Wade legalized abortion throughout the entire country. To this day, you can still find Steinem and Ms. speaking out on the injustices towards women.

With her massive amounts of success and undeniable beauty, the singer, who exemplified hippie chic, was a magnet for rock star men. During her time in the limelight, the "You're So Vain" singer coupled up with the likes of Mick Jagger and Cat Stevens.
