A 16-year-old California girl was bitten six times after stepping into a rattlesnake nest while searching for a cell phone signal. Vera Oliphant was bitten by an adult rattlesnake and five younger ones while searching for a signal to call her mother and text her boyfriend while at her uncle's house. Oliphant says she didn't see the snakes until they were already biting her.
She returned to her uncle's home, and he rushed her to the hospital. She spent four hours in the intensive care unit of Sharp Grossmont Hospital, where doctors gave her 24 vials of anti-venom. Oliphant, who returned to school yesterday, advised others to watch where they step, and "wait until you are somewhere that you can call people."
