14. Spellbound (1945)
Stars: Ingrid Bergman, Gregory Peck, Michael Chekhov, Leo G. Carroll, John Emery, Steven Geray
Spellbound is Alfred Hitchcock at his most audacious. Ingrid Bergman stars as a psychiatrist working extra hard to help an amnesiac (Gregory Peck) recover his true identity, instead of the doctor one he's been posing with. Using psychoanalysis as his driving force, Hitchcock went trippy and avant-garde for Spellbound's centerpiece dream sequence, hiring surrealist painter Salvador Dali to design the scene's bizarre, disorienting imagery: faceless men, blank playing cards, a person falling from a building, scissors, and close-ups of eyes, amongst other odd cues.
