Remember Carrier IQ? No? Refresh your memory here. The mobile software caused a lot of controversy after it was discovered that it secretly tracked activities of mobile users. The raised privacy concerns of mobile users has lead Massachusetts Rep. Ed Markey to propose The Mobile Device Privacy Act.
All mobile services, devices, and vendors offering downloadable mobile applications will be covered under the proposed act. Additionally, companies would be required to enforce secure polices for any personal information they receive. Penalties of up to $3,000 will be enforced for companies who violate the terms of the Act.
Even though the proposal is being pushed to protect the privacy of mobile users, the Act does not go into detail on how users should be disclosed when software is actively monitoring them. Would The Mobile Device Privacy Act give you a piece of mind in regards to privacy if passed?
