Long before Tobey Maguire or Andrew Garfield donned the webbed mask of Spider-Man, Charlie Sheen apparently tried to get his own big screen version of the Web Slinger off the ground. In an interview on Jay Mohr’s podcast, the controversial actor detailed his past experience with the franchise.
"I had an office at Orion at the time, and I brought them Spider-Man," Sheen told Mohr. "I said, 'Look, in a couple of years, I'll be too old to play Peter Parker.' And they said, 'Yeah, we're just thinking that cartoons are not the future, comic books are not the future.' And I said, 'But it's Spider-Man, I'm perfect.' And they were like, 'Nah, we're gonna wait.'"
Orion Pictures went under in 1988, so the version of Spider-Man that Sheen wanted to put on the screen would have been out at least 15 years before Sam Raimi’s original. The ironic part is that his dad, Martin Sheen, played Uncle Ben in The Amazing Spider-Man this past summer. Did comic book fans dodge a bullet here? Let us know.
