It appears that the folks behind American Idol are throwing mountains of cash at popular music stars hoping to entice anyone with even a dose of mainstream relevance to join its panel of judges. Sadly, it's not working. Katy Perry reportedly turned down a whopping $20 million offer to join the show.
"She was being hotly pursued," a source told Us Weekly. "They really wanted her."
Back in July, she explained her lack of interest.
"People have reached out to me about the possibility of being involved, and it's not right for me yet," she told the Hollywood Reporter.
Historically, judges on American Idol, and competition-based reality shows in general, are stars who are a few years removed from their prime. Like Jennifer Lopez, who couldn't buy a hit prior to joining the Idol cast. And while there are certainly acts who buck that trend— Adam Levine and Cee-Lo's involvement with The Voice, among others— they're not really on Perry's level, presently. With her record-settingTeenage Dream LP, she's not just a popular artist, but one of the biggest stars in all of music. There's certainly a great bit of distance between her and Mariah Carey, who's earning $18 million to judge.
So we get it. She's not going to cannibalize her career to judge others.
