Ren & Stimpy: Adult Party Cartoon (8 episodes)

Ren & Stimpy: Adult Party Cartoon (8 episodes)

Stars: John Kricfalusi

It was too ballsy and crazy of an idea to ever fully succeed. In the summer of 2003, The Ren & Stimpy Show creator John Kricfalusi somehow got the executives at Spike to allow him to revive the wickedly strange cartoon for an adults-only audience. That's right, loony chihuahua Ren Hoek and braindead feline Stimpson J. Cat were given an R-rated edge, and neither the mainstream or critics were too kind to their new approach.

Our take: Though it's definitely not as strong as the characters' original run, Ren & Stimpy: Adult Party Cartoon is too insane to ignore. Kricfalusi, taking the whole "grown-up" thing a bit too far, laced Adult Party Cartoon with foul language and uncomfortable sexual undertones, alternating from having Ren objectify women to implying that the old friends might even be a little gay for one another. That degree of creative fearlessness deserves attention, even if it's not entirely successful.
