Gaikai co-founder David Perry may be making headlines now because his company is joining the Sony family, but before he became a game-streaming pioneer, he was well known as the creator of a little SNES-era platformer called Earthworm Jim.
Earthworm Jim has been gone a long time, but Perry hasn't forgotten about him, he explained at last week's Develop conference in Brighton, England, and neither has his team:
"It's one of those things that, no one's got the time right now. I'm sure it's going to happen, I just can't tell you exactly when," Perry told Eurogamer. "It's just a bunch of guys who all have their own thing. Everyone has their own company. So, to get them to stop what they're doing and work on a game is very difficult, but it's something they all want to do."
Perry says members of the team keep in touch on Facebook, and have discussed the idea of raising money for a new Earthworm Jim on Kickstarter.
"The thing we had talked about in the past is Jim had been in retirement. So, he's been sitting at home watching movies and eating popcorn. He's grossly overweight now. The plan was to start with him literally getting off the sofa, and it's a disaster because he just hasn't done anything since. But he's got to get back into action again."
According to Perry, the purely-theoretical new Earthworm Jim would stay true to its 2D platforming roots, with "little" camera control.
It sounds to me like Perry needs to drop everything and go on a road trip to "get the band back together", Blues Brothers-style... Or at the very least that should be the idea for the team's Kickstarter video.
