If you haven't heard about author E.L. James' novel Fifty Shades of Grey from your middle-aged aunts by now, then you've definitely heard it mentioned on the radio, seen someone reading it on the train, or read a blog post about the dozens of hypersexual celebrities expressing interest in playing its BDSM-oriented protagonists. The novel, which was inspired by Twilight fan fiction, is a jarringly erotic yet laughable tale involving "silver balls," "a red room of pain" and of course, a star-crossed love story.
When the trilogy (the last two being Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed) is not a topic of discourse among feminists and academics, it's a subject of parody. From Ellen Gegeneres to Charlize Theron, many celebrities are personally enjoying, and/or poking fun at the New York Times Best-Selling novel.
