Finally.

Matt Groening, creator of The Simpsons, finally revealed where the infamous town of Springfield is actually located. After keeping it a secret for over two decades, Groening told Smithsonian Magazine that Springfield was named after Springfield, Oregon—located right next to Eugene, Oregon where Groening grew up.

Springfield was named after Springfield, Oregon. The only reason is that when I was a kid, the TV show "Father Knows Best" took place in the town of Springfield, and I was thrilled because I imagined that it was the town next to Portland, my hometown. When I grew up, I realized it was just a fictitious name.

Gizmodo went through the entire city with Google Maps, found a number of key locations from the show and compared them. Check that out, so you can see how Moe’s Tavern stacks up to its inspiration.
